Artists Archivi
Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation
In collaboration with the Careof & Viafarini Documentation Centre
The express wishes made a century ago on behalf of Felicita Bevilacqua
La Masa, founder of the Venetian Foundation bearing her name, included
as one of its goals the promotion of young artists. On this principle,
the Foundation has launched a collaborative initiative with the Italian
association, Careof & Viafarini Documentation Centre, which over the
course of the last decade has proven most active on this front.
The initiative concerns the archiving and examination of work by young
artists and will allow for the flow of data from the Foundation to
the Italian Area, a national data bank that can be consulted on-line.
The mapping launched by artists active in the TriVeneto area will,
in time, allow for the realization of collective exhibitions involving
the work of artists included in the archive.
Since 1991 Viafarini has been active as a non-profit association for
the promotion of contemporary art. It runs an exhibition space and
a documentation centre. The exhibition programme focuses on
the presentation of site-specific projects by artists working at international
level, as for example Martin Creed, Mona Hatoum, Asta Gröting, Jimmie
Durham, Vito Acconci, Rosemarie Trockel, Tobias Rehberger, Maja Bajevic,
Marina Abramovic, Mathilde ter Heijne, Katharina Grosse, Nic Hess
and Federico Herrero. Furthermore, it organises initiatives to promote
current art research of young artists in Italy, with no commercial
purpose, featuring artists selected from the Careof & Viafarini Archive.
The programme includes curatorial projects, installations, performances
and events, as well as workshops, educational activities, and debates
on specific issues.
Since 1995 Viafarini collaborates with the association Careof
in order to offer to the public specific documentation and information
services in the field of contemporary visual arts, such as the Artists
Archive, the Library and the database ArtBox, forming the Careof
- Viafarini Documentation Centre, also on behalf of the Municipality
of Milan (1995-2004).
The Artists Archive collects the documentation of works and
projects by Italian artists, including texts and images such as biographical
material, slides and photos, catalogues, videos, projects, writings,
etc., all of which are listed in a database (www.portfolioonline.it).
The material of the archive is constantly selected by a curator. The
Archive database contains over 9,000 works of circa 480 talented
and up-coming artists, and will soon be available on the internet.
As a database of selected artists’ works, Italian Area is published
online at www.italianarea.it.
The Library, specialised in contemporary visual arts, includes
about 15.000 volumes and 1nearly 2.000 video tapes (both by artists
and documentation videos). The library catalogue can be consulted
through the specific database BiblioBit, which is also online
at www.bibliobit.it
that allows specific researches.
The data bank ArtBox, online at www.undo.net/artbox, contains
information regarding art organisations and schools in Italy and abroad,
as well as stages, residency programmes, competitions, grants, and
financial support for specific projects.
The Viafarini residency programme intends to develop, in collaboration
with other countries, the association's contemporary art activities
by organising residency periods in Italy in studios located at the
Viafarini gallery in Milan.
Viafarini organises and promotes art projects through its
press office, fundraising and assistance.
Viafarini endeavours to establish collaborations and networks
with other art organisations.
In order to enrol in the archive, artists must present a portfolio
in two copies - one for the use by the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation
archive, the other to be inserted in the Careof Viafarini archive.
Portfolios must contain the following: a maximum of 20 slides or photographic
material in A4 format; catalogues, video cassettes, texts and any
other form of material useful for representing the work, biographical
notes and bibliographies; artist’s first and last name, address, telephone
number, email address, place and date of birth. It is advisable to
update material on a regular basis. Portfolios are viewed upon consignment,
or upon delivery if they are sent by mail, in order to verify that
all requirements have been met. Portfolios which meet all the requirements
will be catalogued via computer and conserved in the Archive. The
archive will be periodically examined and sieved by those in charge
in order to have a full understanding of the work contained therein
and to be able to access eventual invitations for participation in
exhibitions. The project coordinator is Marco Ferraris, curator for
the Young Artists Archive of the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation. Since
February 2003 he has been present at the Palazzetto Tito seat of the
Foundation one afternoon per week to receive and discuss young artists’
documentation. For further information or to make an appointment send an email to archivio@bevilacqualamasa.it
, specifying “Archive” in the subject heading. |
