Brief profile of the speakers
Vuk Cosic is a Slovenian artist living in
Ljubljana. He is known as one of the founders of net.art. He has helped
found on-line projects such as Nettime, Syndicate and 7-11 which grew
to form the European "net culture". Some of his most recognized works
include: ASCII History of images in motion (1996); History of art
through airport sign systems (1997); Documenta: Done (1997); ASCII
History of art for the blind (1999). He was a participant in the 49th
Venice Biennale of Visual Arts in 2001.

Derrick De Kerckhove is an internationally
renown Canadian scholar. He is the Director of the McLuhan Program
of culture and technology and is Professor at the French Department
at the University of Toronto (Canada). The McLuhan Program, as well
as the work of McLuhan himself, is aimed at understanding how technology
influences society now and in the future. It promotes a new form of
artistic expression which unites the arts, engineering and new telecommunication
technologies. His work in the fields of media, internet and connective
intelligence has made him one of the most authoritative theorists
on communication today.

Lev Manovich was born in Moscow and moved
to New York in 1981. He studied history of art, architecture, animation,
and programming before beginning his work in the field of computer
media in 1984. Since 1990 his projects have been presented in some
of the most important exhibitions and festivals dedicated to new media.
Manovich is Associate Professor at the Department of Visual Arts of
the University of California where he teaches art and theory of new
media. He is author of the book "The Language of New Media", MIT Press
2001 and "Tekstura: Russian Essays on Visual Culture", Chicago University
Press 1993. His many articles have been published and translated in
over 28 countries.
